Magnus Carlsen goes 36% berserk | Blitz Chess Titled Arena, March 2020

This is a 3-hour blitz chess tournament (Lichess Titled Arena March 2020) I provided commentary on. After a couple games into the arena, I begin following the games of World Chess Champion Magnus Carlsen, who went berserk in 36% of his games. When a player chooses to “berserk”, the initial time is halved and should you win, you gain an additional tournament point. This Lichess Titled Arena was the first of its kind with a blitz 3|0 format. I streamed this event at twitch.tv/ChessNetwork. Lichess Titled Arena March 2020 is held for titled chess players only, namely Grandmasters, International Masters, FIDE Masters, National Masters etc… Magnus Carlsen played under the account “DrNykterstein” for this event. Its $1,000 prize pool goes to the top 5 players, with 1st – $500, 2nd – $250, 3rd – $125, 4th – $75, and 5th – $50. This tournament began on March 21st, 2020 at 3:00 PM EST.

  7. I remember the first titled arena Magnus played in and stomped the crap out of everyone. These days he's messing around half the games

  8. Hey Jerry, you are my favorite chess YouTuber! Thanks for making constant content and congrats on 400k subs! I've been with you since sub 100k! You think you'll ever expand on your chess beginner to master series? You seriously helped my game!

  9. Hey Jerry, I think Magnus had another idea at 2:32:50 when he slid his rook to f1 besides trying to get the kingside pawns rolling. If he got his king over to h1 and the position stayed similar, then there was a very neat tactic other than just trying to push kingside pawns. Although black would probably not fall for it, they might because it would involve Magnus giving up the exchange for the third time in the game. For example, after Rf1, if a4, Kh1, and axb3? (Perhaps hoping to play Ba6 after Bishop recaptures on b3 in order to put pressure on c4 square as well as attack rook) However, white wouldn’t respond with Bxb3, but instead with Rxf6! If black doesn’t recapture, the white just wins back the bishop. If black does recapture with either the pawn or the rook, white will play his queen to g7 with check. Obviously black can’t block check with f file rook and Ke8 drops the queen. If Kd8, then white can play Bb6! Black can’t recapture since it wouldn’t be with check, hence the Kh1 move earlier, and white would respond to Qxb6 with Qd7#. So Magnus would’ve at least won back queen for rook in the end. Although it was a long shot, it is a blitz game and if black got too distracted by the queen side and their own plan, it might’ve worked.

  10. Well done Alireza, very very talented.
Carlsen phenomenal player but lost too many games in this tournament.

  13. this is like us watching Neo in the matrix language

  14. Willing to bet Carlsen plays things like the Scandy to not reveal any potential prep

  15. 1:35:48 winning for white no? why would you resign this…too much respect for Magnus maybe

  16. just curious anyone know wizards real name? kind of a dick move from him for not resigning earlier that last game when he was clearly losing down 2 pawns to none. could have gave carlsen a chance to win if he got a quick pairing.

  17. super impressive performance from alireza especially considering he berserked pretty much half his games

  18. From classic chess world championship to hyperbullet madness..if magnus freaking carlsen enrolls his name, he automatically becomes the favourite, now thats how the 'world chess champion' should be…

  19. some of these games look bogus, magnus not taking a queen, another guy resigning a winning position….wtf is happening. are they coordinating wins and losses? feeels like a scam
